What is it and how a photovoltaic system works ?
A photovoltaic system is a device that , from solar radiation, produces electric power able to be exploited by man . The system consists of the following elements ( see diagram ) :
- A solar generator consists of a set of solar panels that catch the light radiation from the sun and convert it into direct current at low voltage (12 or 24 V ) .
- A battery that stores the energy produced by the generator and allows electric current outside the hours of light or cloudy days .
- A charge controller, whose mission is to prevent overloading or excessive discharge the accumulator , which would cause irreversible damage and ensure that the system operate at the point of maximum efficiency.
- An investor ( optional), which converts the direct current of 12 or 24 V stored in the battery , to AC 230 V.
solar energy panels
A photovoltaic installation without inverter, 12Vdc use
photovoltaic solar energy
A photovoltaic installation with inverter , use a 230Vac
Once the electrical energy stored in the accumulator there are two options : get a line directly from this installation and use lamps and consumption of 12 or 24 Vdc (Scheme ) or convert the direct current into alternating current at 230 V through an inverter ( second scheme ) .
If instead of a solar panel is installed a wind turbine system is called wind . If both are installed will be a mixed system. In this case each one should carry his own regulator . Learn more on how to harness solar energy
